In the 256-page, full -color book The Handel and Haydn Society: Bringing Music to Life for 200 Years, respected writers bring to life the rich history of America’s oldest continuously performing arts institution

Co-edited by Teresa M. Neff and Jan Swafford, the book is available in two editions: a trade edition ($40) and a numbered special edition ($200) bound in cloth, enclosed in a slipcase, and signed by Artistic Director Harry Christophers

October 10, 2014 (Boston, MA) — In Boston, in the early 19th century, a group of entrepreneurial music lovers formed the Handel and Haydn Society in the spirit of recognizing the importance of excellent music to the well-being and civic life of the young American democracy. Two hundred years later, H+H enjoys a rich history central to the enjoyment and development of classical music in this country.

Two centuries of history provide a wealth of stories, many of which are shared in the new book, The Handel and Haydn Society: Bringing Music to Life for 200 Years.

With essays by Michael Broyles, Matthew Guerrieri, Thomas Forrest Kelly, Steven Ledbetter, Teresa M. Neff, Jan Swafford, and Donald Teeters, the book fully traces the background of Handel and Haydn Society’s 1815 founding through its evolution as a professional ensemble focused on Historically Informed Performance. From its Boston and New England roots in singing schools and societies through the formative days of recent artistic directors Thomas Dunn, Christopher Hogwood, and Harry Christophers.

Illustrated in full color with both photographs and artifacts from Handel and Haydn’s extensive archives— as well as from the Boston Public Library—this is history at its best, a fitting tribute to the thousands who have collaborated over two centuries to create and perform beautiful music and who have made this institution a model of its kind.

In the January 29, 2014 Culture Blog of The New Yorker, William Robin wrote, “American classical music launched in earnest on Christmas Day of 1815. The Boston Handel and Haydn Society—comprised of middle-class music lovers—unveiled excerpts from European oratorios, and concluded with a rousing ‘Hallelujah’ chorus. “There is nothing to compare with it; it is the wonder of the nation,” proclaimed one critic. Next year, the Society will celebrate its two-hundredth anniversary. How many other American phenomena have endured for two centuries?”

Reading these essays, one comes to understand not only the evolution of a Boston institution, but the struggles, defeats, and triumphs many musical organizations that manage to survive must endure. The book brings to life the rich history of H+H and its continuing importance in the classical music world.

“Instrumental Voices: A Campaign for H+H” is the largest fundraising campaign on record for an early music organization in the US

Handel and Haydn has already raised $9 million toward a $12 million goal

The campaign will help support artistic initiatives, expand educational programs, and sustain program quality and growth through endowment support

October 10, 2014 (Boston, MA) — With great fanfare as it opened its Bicentennial Season, the Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) announced a bold $12 million capital campaign that, once achieved, will maintain the organization’s financial stability and high artistic standards for decades to come.

“This Bicentennial Season is a year of exciting activity and concerts that will showcase our many strengths,” said Campaign Co-chair Todd Estabrook at a special 6pm reception at Symphony Hall’s Higginson Hall. “I hope you will agree that it is exciting to be connected with H+H and to support this unprecedented capital campaign that will be truly transformative.” The reception, which included remarks from Harvard Kennedy School professor and senior CNN analyst David Gergen, preceded the opening concert of the Bicentennial Season, Baroque Fireworks! H+H Turns 200.

Estabrook, Robert H. Scott, and Kathleen W. Weld are the three co-chairs of the campaign steering committee.

The capital campaign, titled “Instrumental Voices: A Campaign for H+H,” has been two years in the making. The “quiet phase” of the campaign, which focused on the board and certain longtime H+H friends, netted extraordinarily generous gifts, including three donations of $1 million apiece, the largest in H+H’s history. These gifts were bestowed by honorary co-chairs of the capital campaign, Wat & Jane Tyler and Karen Levy, as well as an anonymous donor. Moreover, 150 additional gifts from donors and volunteers have boosted the campaign to its current figure of $9 million, 75% toward its $12 million goal.

“H+H has undertaken this campaign with the same ambition and boldness that characterize every one of their performances,” said Wat Tyler in a prepared statement. “I’m amazed at what they’ve accomplished so far and have high hopes for the future.”

H+H Executive Director and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard told attendees, “Through your support of H+H, you are lending your voice to a 200-year-old chorus of passionate music lovers. Thank you for being a part of our history and our future.”

Specifically, the Instrumental Voices campaign will allow H+H to continue to invest in its musicians—enhancing both the artistic caliber of our organization and the Greater Boston arts community as a whole. By attracting and retaining the finest established and emerging soloists, period instrument players, and singers, H+H will continue to provide a compelling, unforgettable concert experience in which audience members and musicians develop an intimate bond through the music.

Furthermore, the campaign also includes funds to extend H+H’s performance area beyond Greater Boston, augment educational outreach programs and the H2 Young Professionals program, and engage in collaborations with other Boston arts organizations. The campaign will also expand Heartstrings, H+H’s free ticket program for underserved populations and education program participants.

October 15, 2014 (Boston, MA) — Fresh from last weekend’s electrifying Symphony Hall performances of Vivaldi’s “Summer” concerto from The Four Seasons, Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky presents on October 31 and November 2 a challenging program of Vivaldi, Torelli, and Tartini works, displaying her full virtuosity and musical range.

Sometimes translated as “The Harmonic Whim” or “The Musical Fantasy,” Vivaldi’s Opus 3 collection of concertos, L’estro armonico, form the majority of this concert program. Composed 14 years before Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, the dozen concertos that make up L’estro armonico established Vivaldi as the leading Italian composer of his day. J.S. Bach and other Baroque composers were fascinated by this music, and the compositions were highly influential in establishing the model of the 18th-century concerto.

“In L’estro armonico, Vivaldi uses the elements of the 18th-century string orchestra in endlessly inventive ways to bring us a varied textural palette,” says Nosky. “The concertos fluctuate in mood and character and are engaging to perform.”

Nosky will be joined by violinist Susanna Ogata and cellist Guy Fishman as co-soloists in two of the program’s selections. They will share the stage with members of the H+H Period Instrument Orchestra.

In what Nosky calls a “provocative” program, she will also perform Torelli’s Concerto for Violin in E minor and Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata, a work made famous by its fiendish difficulty and eerie legend of the Devil visiting the composer in a dream.

The upcoming performances at NEC’s Jordan Hall follow the hugely successful Mendelssohn’s Library program that Nosky curated and performed last season. Now in her fifth season as H+H Concertmaster, Nosky has been uniformly praised by critics and audiences for her skill and verve. “Nosky’s playing was distinguished not only by her dance-like physical exuberance, but also by a sense of style and of fantasy that helped lift the virtuosic music at hand above any sense of mere passagework,” said The Boston Globe’s Jeremy Eichler in an April 2013 review.

“Since joining H+H in 2011, Aisslinn has been a never-ending fount of creativity and blazing energy for our organization,” says H+H Executive Director and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard.

Aisslinn Nosky, who was appointed Concertmaster of the Handel and Haydn Society in 2011, is directing her second H+H program after April’s critically acclaimed Mendelssohn’s Library. With a reputation for being one of the most dynamic and versatile violinists of her generation, Nosky is in great demand internationally as a soloist, leader, and concertmaster. Recent collaborations include the Thunder Bay Symphony, the Lameque International Baroque Festival Orchestra, Arion Baroque Orchestra, the Calgary Philharmonic, Collegium Musicum Hanyang, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.

Nosky is also a member of I FURIOSI Baroque Ensemble. For over a decade, this innovative Canadian ensemble has presented its own edgy and inventive concert series in Toronto and toured Europe and North America drawing new audiences to Baroque music. With the Eybler Quartet, Nosky explores repertoire from the first century of the string quartet literature on period instruments. The Eybler Quartet’s latest recording of Haydn’s Opus 33 string quartets was released to critical acclaim in 2012, as well as her 2013 CORO recording of Haydn’s Violin Concerto in G Major with the Handel and Haydn Society.

Since 2005, Nosky has been a highly active member of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and has toured and appeared as soloist with this internationally-renowned ensemble.

Violinist and H+H Assistant Concertmaster Susanna Ogata enjoys an active performance schedule in greater New England and beyond. She has been praised for “totally convincing, spontaneous and free flowing playing” (The Berkshire Review) and her musical “sensitivity and fire” (Boston Musical Intelligencer). Ogata is dedicated to exploring music on historical instruments and has performed as soloist and principal player with the Bach Ensemble (led by Joshua Rifkin), Arcadia Players, Ensemble Florilège, Newton Baroque, and the Blue Hill Bach Festival. She has also performed in concerts presented by Sarasa and the Boston Early Music Festival.

Susanna Ogata is an active chamber musician and is a founding member of the Boston Classical Trio and Coriolan String Quartet. She has recorded for Nonesuch and Telarc and has been featured on WGBH broadcasts. Her teachers and mentors include Charles Castleman, Laura Bossert, Dana Maiben, Malcolm Bilson, Paul O’Dette, and Christel Thielmann. Joining forces with Ian Watson on fortepiano, Ogata is currently recording the complete set of Sonatas for Fortepiano and Violin by Ludwig van Beethoven (Beethoven-Project.com).

Principal H+H cellist Guy Fishman has been performing with the organization since 2002. He is in demand as an early music specialist, soloist, recitalist, chamber, and orchestral musician on period and standard cello. Fishman has appeared with Dawn Upshaw, Gil Kalish, Mark Peskanov, Daniel Stepner, Eliot Fisk, Richard Egarr, and Natalie Merchant in recital, and performs at prestigious summer festivals and with respected orchestras such as the Albany Symphony and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.

Guy Fishman studied with David Soyer, Peter Wiley, Julia Lichten, and Laurence Lesser— the latter at the New England Conservatory where he earned his doctorate. He is a Fulbright Fellow and studied with famed Dutch cellist Anner Bylsma in Amsterdam. Fishman is on the faculties of New England Conservatory and several Boston-area colleges. He has recorded for the Centaur, Coro, Telarc, Titanic, and Newport Classics labels. He plays a rare cello, made in Rome in 1704 by David Tecchler.

Handel and Haydn Society Announces Financial Surplus for Fiscal Year 2014

H+H heads into its Bicentennial Season in peak fiscal shape, as well as on track to meeting the goals set out in 2012’s Five-Year Strategic Plan

At its annual meeting, voters re-elect Nicholas Gleysteen as Chairman of the Board

September 30, 2014 (Boston, MA) —  At its annual meeting held in Boston on September 29, the Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) presented its audited financial statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014 and announced that it had generated a surplus as well as reached key organizational goals for the 2013–2014 Season. Also discussed was the implementation and completion of the second year of the institution’s Strategic Plan, adopted in fall 2012 to guide the organization through its 2015 Bicentennial and beyond.

“The 199th season of the Handel and Haydn Society was one of the most memorable in recent years,” said Executive Director and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard. “Because of the commitment and immense talents of our musicians, leadership, artistic and community partners, patrons, and staff, H+H is poised to continue to serve Boston and enrich the lives of music lovers around the world.”

“It  has been a great honor and pleasure to serve this venerable organization, and I’m thrilled to continue working alongside Marie-Hélène and Artistic Director Harry Christophers as we move into, and beyond, H+H’s Bicentennial,” said Board Chairman Nicholas Gleysteen. “We remain most grateful to  the people of Boston, which is one of the most engaged musical audiences in the world.”

With a budget of $4.3 million and an endowment of well over $6 million, the organization is on solid financial footing for its ambitious Bicentennial Season, which begins on October 10 with the Symphony Hall program Baroque Fireworks! H+H Turns 200. Other Bicentennial events include a commission, an exhibition at the Boston Public Library’s Central Branch at Copley Square, free concerts for the Boston community, expanded educational initiatives, special lectures, and recording projects.

H+H ended its FY14 fiscal year on June 30, 2014, with a surplus of $11,312. H+H balanced its budget with total revenue of $4,293,194 and total expenses of $4,281,882. Unrestricted contributions from individuals and institutions, representing more than half of operating revenues, remained strong, including a successful Society Ball, H+H’s annual gala fundraiser. The Handel and Haydn Society generated over 40% of its total revenue from earned revenue. Furthermore, H+H completed a rebranding under the expertise help of Minelli, Inc. in Boston,

The Handel and Haydn Society’s 2013–2014 season, the fifth under Artistic Director Harry Christophers’ visionary leadership, was a stunning platform for H+H’s exceptional Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus, from Bach’s monumental Mass in B Minor to the powerful Handel oratorio Samson. In addition to over 25 subscription concerts at Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and Sanders Theatre, H+H brought back Holiday Sing, a December family-friendly concert featuring the H+H Chorus and youth choruses at Faneuil Hall. H+H was also featured in the Celebrity Series’ 75th anniversary presentation of Mark Morris’ new production of Handel’s Acis and Galatea at the Shubert Theatre and was invited to perform two concerts during the American Guild of Organists Conference in Boston in June 2014.

Including its community and education initiatives, H+H deepened its work to reach well over 50,000 people last season. Collaborations with educational and arts institutions in the Greater Boston area remain important to Handel and Haydn and a priority within the Strategic Plan. This past season, it presented 26 concerts in partnership with local institutions including the Boston Athenæum, Boston Chinatown Neighborhood Center, Museum of African American History, Peabody Essex Museum, and the Boston Summer Arts Weekend Festival (co-produced by WGBH and the Boston Globe). H+H benefited again from a creative partnership with MassArt wherein 54 junior class students in the Illustration Department created works of visual art inspired by Handel’s dramatic oratorio Samson. Twelve of the pieces were selected for display at the performances of Samson in May.

Providing in-school music education and choral programs, the organization’s school residencies at the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Jamaica Plain and the Joseph Lee School in Dorchester were recently cited in the Boston Globe as a success story. (Beginning this fall, thanks to new foundation grants, H+H will expand the footprint of this program to two more underserved public schools, Michael J. Perkins Elementary School in South Boston and Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester.) Another highlight of this season’s Karen S. and George D. Levy Education Program were the Collaborative Youth Concerts bringing together local high students to perform in front of a combined audience of over 5,000. The 2013–2014  Season also marked the debut of the Young Women’s Chamber Choir, which was comprised of 18 highly advanced singers selected from the Young Women’s Chorus.

At the annual meeting, Nicholas Gleysteen was re-elected Chairman of the Board. Gleysteen, a lawyer and CPA, is a Portfolio Manager at Hellman, Jordan Management Co., and also serves on the Somerset Club Executive Committee, on the boards of Fort Ticonderoga, the National Trust for Scotland USA, the Handel House USA, and on the Norfolk Hunt Club Board of Stewards. Also re-elected as Governors were William Achtmeyer, Amy Anthony, David Elsbree, Todd Estabrook, Kathleen McGirr, Anthony Moosey, Stephen Morrissey, George Sacerdote, Wat Tyler Jr., Thomas Watt, Elizabeth Wax, Kathleen Weld, Jane Wilson, and Christopher Yens. Re-elected Overseers were Richard Bachelder, Howard Fuguet, Nancy Hammer, Paul Kelly, Peter Manson, James Millea, Judith Lewis Rameior, Brenda Reny, and Robert Shapiro. Claire Laporte and Prema Popat were elected as new Overseers.

In addition to Nicholas Gleysteen as Board Chairman and W. Carl Kester, from the Harvard Business School, as First Vice Chair, the following board members were elected Vice Chairs: Julia Cox, financial consultant; Todd Estabrook of Commonwealth Financial; Deborah First, communications consultant; Karen Levy, education specialist; Mary Nada, philanthropist; Michael Scott Morton of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management; and Wat Tyler Jr., philanthropist. Also elected were Jeffrey Thomas, Chief Investment Officer of Atlantic Trust Private Wealth Management, as Treasurer; Winifred Li of Ropes & Gray LLP as Secretary; and Marie-Hélène Bernard as Chief Executive Officer.

The annual meeting also made official the appointment of Ian Watson as Resident Conductor. Harpsichordist and organist with the Handel and Haydn Society since the 2008–2009 Season, Watson in his new role will assist Harry Christophers and guest conductors with programming, concert preparation, leading H+H smaller ensembles in various venues in Boston and on the road. Watson will also conduct H+H’s free outdoor performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on July 26, 2015. “Ian is a trusted and indispensable member of the Period Instrument Orchestra,” said Artistic Director Harry Christophers. “I am delighted that his prodigious talents will be on fuller display here at H+H.”

New to the Education Program staff are Kevin McDonald as conductor of the Vocal Arts Program (VAP) Young Men’s Chorus and Jennifer Kane as conductor of the VAP Singers and Youth Chorus. The 2014–2015 Bicentennial Season’s Vocal Quartet consists of soprano Sarah Moyer, alto Christina English, tenor Christian Figueroa, and bass RaShaun Campbell.

Additionally, soprano Sonja Tengblad has taken on the responsibilities as Teacher-in-Residence at the Joseph E. Lee School and Mother Caroline Academy. Seychelle Dunn is the new Teacher-in-Residence at Perkins Elementary School.

H+H is also pleased to announce the following new staff appointments: Jim Keenan as Director of Marketing and Communications; Louisa Trackman as Associate Director, Institutional Giving; Amanda LaPain as Audience Services Manager; and the promotions of Haley Brown, José Cuadra, and Hannah Grube as Project Coordinator, Assistant Audience Services Manager, and Development Associate, respectively.

H+H Mourns the Death of Christopher Hogwood

The Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) is deeply saddened by the death of its conductor laureate, Christopher Hogwood, who served as Handel and Haydn Society Artistic Director from 1986 to 2001. Christopher Hogwood profoundly changed the direction and vision of this venerable institution, and added tremendously to its renown and international profile.

By completing its evolution in 1989 into an exclusively period-instrument orchestra and chorus, Hogwood ushered in a new and exciting chapter in the history of this 200-year-old organization. His 15-year tenure abounds with great artistic successes, from a splendid collaboration with the Mark Morris Dance Group in a production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice, which toured to the Edinburgh Festival and elsewhere, to unique jazz partnerships with the Dave Brubeck Ensemble, Chick Corea, and the Marian McPartland Trio, among others.

“We are simply heartbroken by this news,” says H+H Executive Director and CEO Marie-Hélène Bernard. “Chris left a permanent footprint on this organization. We were very much anticipating his return in March to lead the Mendelssohn Elijah during the H+H Bicentennial. It’s a milestone that I know meant a great deal to him.”

Born in Nottingham, England on September 10, 1941, Christopher Jarvis Haley Hogwood studied music and classical literature at Pembroke College, Cambridge. His early music influences included conductor and harpsichordist Raymond Leppard and musicologist and harpsichordist Thurston Dart. Dart inspired David Munrow and Hogwood who became the founders of the Early Music Consort of London in 1967. Hogwood then revived the Academy of Ancient Music, a group originally begun in 1726, to study the “old” music of its day. Under Hogwood’s direction, the “new” Academy of Ancient Music performed and recorded on period instruments. He was first approached by the Handel and Haydn Society in 1985 and became its Artistic Director in 1986.

Hogwood began his tenure with a powerful first impression: a Mozart weekend, centered around the Requiem, followed by H+H’s first period-instrument Messiah and a spring full of Bach, Handel, Mozart, Purcell, and Haydn. During his tenure, Boston also heard Handel operas (Giulio Cesare, Semele, Acis and Galatea, and, later, Ariodante) and in 1999, the world premiere of Dan Welcher’s JFK: The Voice of Peace, narrated by David McCullough, which had been commissioned by H+H.

“It was thrilling to work with Chris,” says veteran H+H principal flutist Christopher Krueger. “He brought so many new ideas and so much energy to the projects, that one couldn’t help but feel swept up in a new wave of music-making. Chris was a great leader, but he was always extremely human, always a colleague; he never put himself above any of the musicians he worked with; he seemed to be delighted by all of us,” continues Krueger. “He was a good friend.”

After leaving the Handel and Haydn Society in 2001, Hogwood became Emeritus Director of the Academy of Ancient Music, the orchestra he founded in 1973, during the 2007–2008 Season. In addition to his close association with the Kammerorchester Basel, Hogwood was also a regular guest with the Tonhalle Zurich, Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Athens Camerata. A prolific musician, he made over 250 recordings, including the first-ever complete Mozart symphonies on period instruments.

“Although he made his reputation recording Mozart, Chris was perhaps most passionate about Mendelssohn,” says Mary Deissler, H+H CEO at the time of Hogwood’s tenure. “He felt Mendelssohn could give Mozart and even Beethoven a good run for the money. In 2000 he led the monumental Elijah for the 100th anniversary of Symphony Hall, and it was one of his proudest moments with us.”

A writer and musicologist, Hogwood also edited the music of Mendelssohn and C.P.E. Bach. He was the chair of the editorial board of C.P.E. Bach: The Complete Works, which is published by the Packard Humanities Institute. Hogwood’s personal volumes include Handel: Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks (Cambridge University Press), published in 2005.

H+H will dedicate the performances of Mendelssohn Elijah, to be conducted by former Music Director Grant Llewellyn on March 6 and 8, 2015 at Symphony Hall, to Christopher Hogwood.

September 9, 2014 (Boston, MA) —  The Handel and Haydn Society (H+H), led by Artistic Director Harry Christophers, opens the 2014-2015 Bicentennial Season on October 10 and 12 with the joyous program, Baroque Fireworks! H+H turns 200. The celebration continues with performances of historically significant works that H+H introduced to American audiences in the 19th century (Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, and Haydn’s Creation). The Bicentennial Season culminates in the spring and summer with an interactive exhibit at the Boston Public Library exploring H+H’s history, a world premiere work by prominent American composer Gabriela Lena Frank, and a free outdoor performance of Beethoven’s epic Ninth Symphony (“Ode to Joy”).

Harry Christophers promises the Baroque Fireworks season opener to be “quite the occasion,” brimming with virtuoso playing and popular choral and orchestral selections, including Handel’s Coronation Anthem No. 1, the Bach motet Singet dem Herrn, and Handel’s Music for the Royal Fireworks.

 Also kickstarting the season are two publicationsa Bicentennial commemorative magazine and Bicentennial book. Both retrospective and forward-looking, the 52-page magazine traces H+H’s legendary past and lays out its creative vision for the Bicentennial Season. In the 250-page coffee-table book The Handel and Haydn Society: Bringing Music to Life for 200 Years, published by Godine Publishers, respected writers (Jan Swafford, Teresa M. Neff, Michael Broyles, Matthew Guerrieri, Steven Ledbetter, Donald Teeters, and Thomas Forrest Kelly) bring to life the rich history of this venerable organization. Co-edited by Neff and Swafford, the book is available in two editions: a standard copy ($40) and a numbered special edition ($200) bound in cloth, enclosed in a slipcase, and signed by Artistic Director Harry Christophers.

On October 14, in celebration of H+H’s Bicentennial Season, a new live recording of Handel’s Messiah will be released on the CORO label. Recorded at Boston’s Symphony Hall in November and December 2013, the new CD is H+H’s first recording of Handel’s popular oratorio under Christophers’ direction. Soprano Gillian Keith, countertenor Daniel Taylor, tenor Tom Randle, and baritone Sumner Thompson join the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus in this inspired interpretation.

2014-2015 Bicentennial Season Highlights

 Baroque Fireworks is a fitting introduction to this celebratory season by dramatically showcasing the acclaimed Handel and Haydn Society Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus, as well as Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky (in the “Summer” concerto from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons) and the Vocal Arts Program (VAP) Young Women’s and Young Men’s Choruses. The October 10 and 12 performances of Baroque Fireworks will include a special announcement about H+H’s future, with other surprises in store.

Dazzling H+H Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky leads the second subscription concert of the season: Vivaldi’s demanding L’estro armonicoThis all-Italian Baroque program (October 31 and November 2) features several of the Vivaldi concerti—works that heavily influenced Bach—alongside Tartini’s Devil’s Trill Sonata, a work made famous by its fiendish difficulty and eerie legend of the Devil visiting the composer in a dream.

Late November and December bring three cherished H+H holiday traditions. Harry Christophers conducts the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus and internationally acclaimed soloists in the 161st annual performance of Handel’s Messiah (November 28, 29, and 30). Audiences will “rejoice greatly” with soprano Joélle Harvey, countertenor Tim Mead, tenor Allan Clayton, and bass Brindley Sherratt. On December 18 and 21, Back Bay Chorale Music Director Scott Allen Jarrett takes the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus on a journey through Christmas past, from medieval plainchant to Bach’s Cantata 40 and Cantata IV from the Christmas Oratorio. H+H also welcomes families to celebrate the holidays with the returning Holiday Sing. Guest conductor Lisa Graham, the H+H Chorus, and Vocal Arts  Program youth choirs invite audiences to sing along with holiday favorites at Boston’s historic Great Hall in Faneuil Hall on December 13.

In January 2015, Harry Christophers and Aisslinn Nosky continue their critically-praised survey of the orchestral music of Joseph Haydn. The sequel to 2012’s Haydn in Paris, this January 23 and 25 program has Nosky taking the stage in Haydn’s seldom-heard Violin Concerto in C Major. The concert also features two Haydn symphonies, including the dramatic Symphony No. 83 (La Poule).

On February 13–15, Richard Egarr, a frequent H+H guest conductor and music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, returns to continue his survey of the Beethoven symphonies, this time with the cheerful Symphony No. 1 in C Major. The program includes a performance of Mozart’s Mass in C Minor, K. 139 (Waisenhaus Mass), written by the composer at age 13, and sung by soloists from H+H’s own Chorus.

Egarr’s program is followed by a succession of three of the greatest oratorios, performed over the course of just two months. Known in the 19th century as the Messiah of its day, Mendelssohn’s Elijah is the first in this oratorio triptych. Led by former Artistic Director Grant Llewellyn, it features bass-baritone Andrew Foster-Williams in the title role of the Old Testament prophet (March 6 and 8). Next comes Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, the one-of-a-kind masterwork that H+H last presented in 2012 to sold-out houses. This time, it will be performed during the final days of Lent with Christophers at the podium leading the Period Instrument Orchestra and Chorus, distinguished soloists, and the Young Women’s and Young Men’s Choruses (March 27 and 29). Christophers will also lead performances of Haydn’s Creation (May 1 and 3), a work inspired by the composer’s trips to England where he first heard Handel’s oratorios. Haydn’s crowning choral masterpiece was premiered in the United States by H+H in 1819 and was last performed by the ensemble in 2001.

Boston is the site of the 2015 Chorus America National Conference (June 17– 20), a gathering of 500 choral music professionals from across the country. H+H will host an opening reception on Wednesday, June 17 and centerpiece performance at Symphony Hall on Thursday, June 18 that features Harry Christophers conducting the H+H Chorus and VAP youth choirs. This Symphony Hall concert—Handel and Haydn Sings— includes a new work for chorus and chamber orchestra by award-winning American composer Gabriela Lena Frank. Co-commissioned by H+H and the Library of Congress, the piece draws on Frank’s Peruvian, Jewish, and Chinese heritage and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Boston Hymn” as inspiration.

Special Bicentennial Events

Exhibit at the Boston Central Library in Copley Square                 March 24 – September 7, 2015

H+H’s extensive archives—containing a wealth of photos, concert program books, newspaper clippings, and more—date back to the early 1800s. These treasures, enhanced by interactive media, will be on view at the Boston Public Library for six months, and accessible worldwide in an online collection catalogue. Presented in partnership with the Freedom Trail Foundation and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the exhibit will explore H+H’s 200-year history through the lens of classical music in America. Exhibit admission is free of charge.

Music Critics Association of North America (MCANA) Institute             March 26 – 29, 2015

A MCANA institute will take place in Boston in conjunction with the Handel and Haydn Society’s Bicentennial Season.  Ten MCANA members will attend or participate in panel discussions with local scholars and musicians about historically informed performance and related topics. The Handel and Haydn Society will act as host, shepherding journalists through an exploration of H+H in times past and present, with direct access to H+H artists and staff, concerts, and archives at the Boston Public Library.

This Boston event of the year takes place at Symphony Hall, H+H’s home since 1900, with a focus on celebrating H+H’s important place in the history of Boston and the United States.

The 2014–2015 Bicentennial Season marks Harry Christophers’ sixth as Artistic Director of the Handel and Haydn Society. He has conducted Handel and Haydn each season since September 2006, when he led a sold-out performance in the Esterházy Palace at the Haydn Festival in Eisenstadt, Austria. Christophers’ tenure as Artistic Director began with the 2009–2010 Season. Christophers and H+H have since embarked on an ambitious artistic journey with a showcase of works premiered in the United States by the Handel and Haydn Society over the last 199 years, and partnered with the CORO label to produce a series of recordings leading to the 2015 Bicentennial. Christophers is founder and conductor of the UK-based choir and period-instrument ensemble The Sixteen. He has directed The Sixteen throughout Europe, America, Australia, and the Far East, gaining a distinguished reputation for his work in Renaissance, Baroque, and 20th-century music. In 2000, he instituted The Sixteen’s “Choral Pilgrimage,” a tour of British cathedrals from York to Canterbury. With that ensemble, he has recorded over 100 titles for which he has won numerous awards, including a Grand Prix du Disque for Handel Messiah, numerous Preise der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (German Record Critics Awards), the coveted Gramophone Award for Early Music, and the prestigious Classical Brit Award (2005) for his disc entitled Renaissance. In 2009, he received one of classical music’s highest accolades, the Classic FM Gramophone Awards Artist of the Year Award, and The Sixteen won the Baroque Vocal Award for Handel Coronation Anthems, a CD that also received a 2010 Grammy Award nomination. In 2014, the Sixteen was also awarded a Grammy nomination for Palestrina, Vol. 3.

Harry Christophers is principal guest conductor of the Granada Symphony Orchestra and a regular guest conductor with the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the Orquestra de la Comunidad de Madrid. In October 2008, Christophers was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Music from the University of Leicester. Most recently, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford and also of the Royal Welsh Academy for Music and Drama. He received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) from the Queen of England in 2012 for services to music.



Founded in Boston in 1815, the Handel and Haydn Society (H+H) is considered America’s oldest continuously performing arts organization. H+H will celebrate its Bicentennial in 2015 with a series of special concerts and initiatives to honor 200 years of music making. Today, H+H is widely known through its local subscription series, tours, concert broadcasts on 99.5 WCRB and National Public Radio, and recordings. As a 21st-century performing arts organization, H+H’s primary roles are to perform and educate, and to serve as a resource center and community partner. The Karen S. and George D. WCRB’s Laura Carlo hosts the Sunday, July 27 event at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.

July 8, 2014 (Boston, MA) —  The Handel and Haydn Society, the Boston Globe, and WCRB bring back a fun summer tradition that is both to be heard and savored. The popular Baroque Brunch returns to the Fairmont Copley Plaza, Boston on Sunday, July 27 from 11am to 1pm.

The public is invited to join harpsichordist and director Ian Watson, Concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky, soprano Teresa Wakim, and other beloved H+H musicians for performances of well-known and less familiar Baroque music. This concert / discussion will take place on the final day of the Boston Globe WGBH Boston Summer Arts Weekend.

Works by Handel, Purcell, and Vivaldi are scheduled to be performed. The titles of pieces will not be announced until concert day to preserve an element of surprise.

H+H Education Outreach Program Announces Three Scholarship Winners

Past award recipients have gone on to many of the nation’s leading conservatories, including the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and New England Conservatory.

Jessica Toupin receives Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award

The Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award of $1,500 is presented to a graduating high school soloist who intends to continue his or her musical studies in college. The award was established in 2001 in loving memory of Candace Achtmeyer, a member of the Handel and Haydn Society Board from 1993–2001 and a member of the Education Committee, where she voiced passionate opinions about H+H’s responsibility to the community and children.

Jessica Toupin has been singing soprano in H+H’s Young Women’s Chorus since her sophomore year in high school and in the Soloist program during her senior year. Of her H+H experience, Jessica says, “It was in the choral room at Boston Latin where I discovered the power of choral music, and it was in my lessons at New England Conservatory Preparatory School where I fell in love with composers like Bellini and Fauré, and thought to myself, ‘This is it, I want to have a career in the world of music.'” In the fall, Jessica plans on enrolling in the undergraduate program at University of Massachusetts/Amherst Commonwealth College where she will double major in vocal performance and music business or mathematics.

Jenna Lorusso receives Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence

The Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence extends H+H’s support to an outstanding high school soloist alumnus/a who has pursued further musical studies and professional performance with an award of $2,000. The award is named in honor of Handel and Haydn Society Governor Barbara E. Maze, who served on the board from 1993–2009 and was instrumental in creating the Vocal Arts Program (VAP).  For 40 years, she was an assistant dean of student affairs at Boston University where she influenced many students in their pursuit of professional music careers.

Jenna Lorusso graduated from Westminster Choir College of Ryder University this May where she pursued a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. During her tenure at Westminster Choir College, she sang in the chorus for Westminster Opera Theatre’s production of Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann. This past fall, she covered the role of Madam Silberklang in Mozart’s Der Schauspieldirektor, her first full operatic role. Her senior year capstone project was a lecture-recital on the Spanish influence on French and German song. In the fall, Jenna will continue to pursue voice studies at the graduate level.

Andrew Milne receives Evangelyna Etienne Award

The Evangelyna Etienne Award provides a $500 award to a current or former VAP student age 16-24 who plans to continue vocal training at the college level. The award was created in memory of VAP alumna and two-time scholarship winner Evangelyna Etienne who passed away in September 2011 after battling a terminal illness. Through her commitment and passion for vocal music, Evangelyna displayed a generosity of spirit and an ability to inspire.

Andrew Milne is enrolled in the undergraduate program at the SUNY Fredonia School of Music, where he is majoring in music education and choral-vocal studies. Upon his anticipated graduation in 2015, Andrew plans on pursuing a career as a middle school or high school music educator. His graduate study plans include seeking a master’s degree in choral conducting. An Eagle Scout, he spends his summers at Cub Adventure Day Camp in Bolton, Mass., where he is program director. In addition, he will be starting a community chorus in his hometown for anyone who is interested in singing, regardless of age and ability.  “The music program and the people in Westborough have given me so much over the years, and I want to give something back to them all in the best way I know how,” he says.
