The Handel and Haydn Society holds both instrumental and vocal auditions once a year for substitute positions with our orchestra and chorus.
Instrumental Auditions
Instrumental Auditions will be held in Spring 2009.
Auditions are held for PERIOD INSTRUMENTS ONLY. We do not hold auditions for modern instruments. Applicants should be playing on either a period instrument or a modern reproduction, and be prepared to perform at either A=415 or A=430. If the applicant chooses to play works from both the Baroque and Classical periods on the audition he/she can play at either pitch. Requirements are as follows:
Violin, Viola, Cello:
* Any unaccompanied piece by J.S.Bach
* One additional piece or movement of a piece (of the candidate's choice) from the Baroque or Classical repertoire
Winds and Brass, Bass:
* Two or three contrasting pieces or movements of pieces (of the candidate's choice) from the Baroque or Classical repertoire
We do not currently hear auditions on keyboard instruments or percussion.
These auditions are for substitute positions with the orchestra only. We currently have a core group of tenured instrumentalists, which includes the principals in each section as well as some section players. If you are placed on the substitute list as a result of the audition you may or may not be hired based upon the number of players needed and the number of openings for each individual concert. We do not hold auditions for instrumental soloists.
Instrumentalists wishing to be considered for auditions should send a resume to the following address:
Jesse Levine, Personnel Manager
Handel and Haydn Society
300 Massachusetts Ave.
Boston, MA 02115
Resumes can also be emailed to: jlevine@handelandhaydn.org.
The resume should be either sent as an attached file or placed in the body of the email letter.
When your resume is received you will be contacted by mail or phone in late regarding audition times and requirements. Any questions regarding the auditions should be sent to either of the above addresses.

Vocal Auditions
Vocal Auditions will be held in Fall 2008.
Singers are required to submit a recording for the first round of the audition process. This should be a CD or tape with two contrasting arias from the baroque and/or classical periods. At least one of the arias should demonstrate florid passage-work (similar to the sixteenth-note passages in Handel's "Every Valley Shall be Exalted" or "Rejoice Greatly, O Daughter of Zion" from Messiah). Recordings of live performances are acceptable, as are recordings made in studios. If the recording includes more than two arias, please indicate which two arias you would like us to consider for the audition. Singers who pass the first round of auditions will be invited to audition in person for the second round. Repertoire for the second round will consist of two contrasting arias, plus a selection chosen by the Handel and Haydn Society (music for this selection will be sent two weeks before the audition date). CD’s or tapes should be clearly marked with your name and voice type, and sent along with a resume to:
Jesse Levine, Personnel Manager
Handel and Haydn Society
300 Massachusetts Ave.
Boston, MA 02115
All material must be received by October 1, 2008.
CD’s or tapes will not be returned.
