Director of Marketing and Communications

DESCRIPTION:  The Handel and Haydn Society, the oldest continuously-performing arts organization in the country, seeks a Director of Marketing and Communications responsible for all earned revenue, audience development and institutional positioning and communications. This position develops and implements a comprehensive marketing plan to support the strategic mission of the organization and position Handel and Haydn Society locally, nationally, and internationally while building and developing audiences to grow earned revenue for the organization.

STATUS: Full-time

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Marketing and Sales

Working with the Executive Director/CEO and the senior management team, establishes earned revenue goals and marketing expense budgets for all Handel and Haydn Society activities.

Designs campaign strategy and executes successful sales and marketing campaigns to support earned revenue goals including: establishing effective ticket pricing and packaging for subscription and single-ticket sales campaigns; including direct mail, e-marketing, telemarketing, group sales and community partnerships to maximize audience development goals and achieve box office revenue.

Creates and executes promotional and sales plans including group sales strategy, business partnership development, advertising campaign, and promotions of all events, in support of earned revenue goals.

Conducts market research and data analysis, monitors trends, and in collaboration with the marketing team, implements marketing strategies that support the Handel and Haydn Society institutional brand. Work with marketing consultants as needed.

Responsible for development of website content for sales and marketing and through the application of other web-based consumer interfaces and social media to maximize revenue.

Community and Promotional Partnerships

Identifies and cultivates collaborative community and promotional partnerships in support of H+H’s activities and earned income and audience development goals.

Communications

Oversees institutional communication strategies with the support of the PR and Communications Manager. Develops, implements and manages communication strategies and key messages for H+H to build awareness of the organization and its programs.  Coordinates internal and external communication that supports H+H’s strategic plan.

General Administration

Leads and manages Department of five (5) employees. Develops and monitors the Department’s budget and ensures revenue and expenses are managed efficiently and to budget. Supervises Marketing Manager, PR and Communications Manager, Design and Multimedia Manager, and Audience Services Manager. Marketing Assistant report sot Marketing Manager while Box Office assistants (2) report to Audience Services Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The qualified and successful candidate will be a seasoned professional with at least five (5) to ten (10) years of senior-level marketing and communications experience, including a proven track record of achieving earned income goals through the successful execution of sales campaigns.  Knowledge of baroque and classical music is essential. This position requires experience in data-driven and market research decision-making, marketing and sales planning, and budgeting.  The successful candidate will have a proven record of success in developing opportunities for promotional partnerships and collaborations with sponsors, media and community organizations.   Qualified candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field from an accredited university or college. An advanced degree in marketing or related field is desirable.

Strong written communication and public presentation skills required. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, integrity, maturity and good judgment. This candidate will also be a team player and have attention to detail with the ability and desire to manage people and projects simultaneously.   This position also requires the ability to think strategically and skill in working with an audience development team and other creative talent in order to achieve the highest standards in all marketing, advertising and promotional materials.

Demonstrated ability to work manage a team effectively in a fast paced environment, meet multiple deadlines, organize time and priorities and work well as a member of the team.  Ability to work occasional nights and weekends.
