Join the H+H Youth Choruses

We would love to welcome you into the H+H community of singers!

Chorus Auditions

Thank you for your interest in singing with the H+H Youth Choruses! We are welcoming new singers into all ensembles for the 2021-2022 season! We invite you to prepare an audition, which gives our conductors the chance to get to know you and your individual instrument and make a recommendation for the ensemble that will be the best fit for you.

If you would prefer to sing a live audition for one of our conductors, we are glad to schedule an audition for you on Zoom or in person.

Students who are also interested in singing with the Concert Choir or Chamber Choir should refer to the additional audition requirements for these ensembles.

Your acceptance into an H+H ensemble is based on your maturity, age, musicianship, and schedule availability. H+H Youth Choruses are comprised of students ages 7-18. No prior musical training is required and there is no cost to audition.

About the Audition

How to create a great audition recording

  1. Take time to learn “America” (My Country, ‘Tis of Thee) so you can feel at ease and confident while you sing. The sheet music is available here and you can practice with the videos made by HHYC singers Aidan, Bryana, and KeeSeok.
  2. You might choose to record while listening to one of the video practice tracks or one of our audio-only tracks. If you listen to a track while recording, please have the recorded audio playing in headphones so we only hear your voice on your submission.
  3. Find a quiet space to record that is free from distractions. If you will be doing a video audition, check your lighting to be sure we can see you and be sure your camera is placed so it records your full face.
  4. Sing out with a full, supported sound, and be expressive!
  5. Check your recording before submission to make sure the sound is clear, and there is no distortion.
  6. Submit the video recording of your performance by uploading it to Dropbox here. You don't need a Dropbox account to upload your video. Please save the file with the singer's name as the file name.

We can’t wait to hear you and would love to welcome you into the H+H community of singers!

Concert Choir Auditions

Singers with treble voices in grades 6-9 are invited to audition for the Concert Choir. No prior experience in HHYC is required. To audition for the Concert Choir:

  1. Complete the HHYC audition form.
  2. Submit a video or audio recording of “America” as detailed above.
  3. Ask a teacher to complete this teacher recommendation formYou will receive a confirmation from H+H when your recommendation has been received.
  4. Sing a Zoom audition with the conductor of the ensemble, Dr. Jennifer Kane. Upon completing the HHYC audition form, you’ll receive communication from a member of the HHYC faculty about scheduling your audition. In your audition, you'll do some vocal exercises and sight-singing and be asked to perform an unaccompanied prepared piece. Your solo selection can be anything that you love to sing - a few verses of a folk song, hymn, or favorite piece of choral music would all work well. If you'd like to learn something new, we recommend "O Music" by Lowell Mason (an early president of H+H!) You can find the sheet music here and a recording below.

Chamber Choir Auditions

  2. Submit a video or audio recording of “America” as detailed above.
  3. Submit a video recording of an art song of your choosing. Please select a song that best represents your abilities and talent as a vocalist. This should be performed with accompaniment or an accompaniment track. If you need an idea for a piece to sing, consult this list.
  4. Submit a video or audio recording of you singing a major scale a cappella on solfa, a neutral syllable, or with numbers and the vocal warm-ups demonstrated in the audio file below.
Using headphones, play this audio file in your earpiece while you record yourself performing the warm-ups.
  5. Ask a teacher to complete this teacher recommendation form. You will receive a confirmation from H+H when your recommendation has been received.
