Michael Galvin

BASS-BARITONE

A native of Albany, New York, bass-baritone Michael Galvin has garnered a reputation as a “distinguished and disarming” young singer (Rochester City Newspaper). Residing in Boston, Michael has appeared in productions with the Boston Lyric Opera (La Boheme; Omar; Champion; Aida; Die tote Stadt) and the Boston Early Music Festival (Don Quichotte; Circé; Alcina; Orlando Generoso). In 2021 Michael premiered Iphigenia, a new work by Esperanza Spalding and Wayne Shorter, in partnership with ArtsEmerson and The Kennedy Center. This season, Michael appears as a concert soloist with the Indianapolis Baroque Ensemble for St. John Passion and Back Bay Chorale in Carissimi’s Jephte. A sought-after ensemble singer, he has made recurrent appearances with The Handel and Haydn Society, Washington D.C.-based ensemble The Thirteen, and Nightingale Vocal Ensemble. An avid Baroque singer, Michael is an alumnus of the 2019 Boston Early Music Festival Young Artist Training Program, where he sang the role of Soroastro in Handel’s Orlando. He is also featured on the Boston Early Music Festival’s recording of Circé with CPO records. Beyond the concert stage, Michael is also known as Donatella Fermata, a drag artist blending classical music with drag to make the genre more accessible. A 2024 Live Arts Boston Grant recipient, he champions LGBTQ+ artists through innovative performances. As Donatella, he recently portrayed the Sorceress in Atlanta Baroque’s Dido and Aeneas. Michael holds a Master of Music in Voice from the Eastman School of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Voice from Ithaca College.
