From the Conductor, Alyson Greer Espinosa

Currently, I am in the final stages of putting our repertoire together for this tour. The theme for our repertoire is “America and the Handel and Haydn Society.” The first set of repertoire we will be studying and performing music from the Old Colony Collection. The Old Colony Collection is an extensive anthology that contains a diverse array of compositions that were sung on both sides of the Atlantic and includes anthems and ‘glees’ as well as selections from Handel’s oratorios and arrangements of works by Mozart. The Handel and Haydn Society published these anthologies 200 years ago, and we will be learning more about them from Dr. Teresa Neff in January. From these anthologies we will be performing pieces like “The Heavens Are Telling” from the Creation, “Hallelujah” from the Messiah, “When Winds Breathe Soft” by Samuel Webbe, “Hark! The vesper hymn is stealing” a Russian Air, “Almighty God when round Thy shrine” by Mozart. The second set of repertoire will then focus on a few pieces by Florence B. Price. As many of you know, Price studies at the New England Conservatory of Music and she has written many beautiful choral pieces, such as “Wander-Thirst,” “Summer Clouds,” and “Resignation” which is our catalyst piece to move our audience to the final set of repertoire – Spirituals. Many of you remember that as a program we studied Spirituals in HHYC last season under the guidance of Dr. Anthony Trecek-King. I am looking forward to us performing a few of Dr. Trecek-King’s spiritual arrangements along with others.
