BASS

Colorado native Jacob Cooper is acclaimed for his dynamic stage presence in opera, recital, and choral performances. Described as “stunning” by The Boston Globe, he has long specialized in historically informed performance. He regularly sings with several New England ensembles, enjoying solo turns with the Handel and Haydn Society, Emmanuel Music, Arcadia Players, Boston Baroque, and the Henry Purcell Society of Boston. He has also appeared with Boston Camerata, Upper Valley Baroque, and The Connecticut Early Music Festival, among many others.

His commitment to the drama of sung text has been noted in his “impeccable diction” (Classical Voice of New England) and in showcasing “the best piece of Shakespearean acting I’ve seen all year” (HubReview) as Ford (Falstaff) with Boston Opera Collaborative. He frequently appears with Odyssey Opera and was recently engaged in a developmental workshop of Strauss’ Salome. Additional opera roles have ranged from Saul in Charpentier’s David et Jonathas, Leporello (Don Giovanni), Belcore (L’Elisir d’Amore), to John Brooke (Little Women), and the lead role of Lord Collins in the premier of OperaHub’s Der Vampyr.

A champion of contemporary music, he has worked with several composers on premieres of song and opera, has enjoyed projects with BMOP and Juventas New Music, and has recorded extensively with new music studio ensembles Vox Futura and Philovox. In the past few years, he has been exploring storytelling in Western Massachusetts recitals to present lesser-known songs in an engaging way. He currently resides in southern Vermont with his wife and 2 cats.
