Joy Grimes
VIOLA
Dr. Joy Grimes loves the thrill and challenge of playing renaissance and baroque music; her interest was piqued after spending four seasons with the Utah Shakespearian Festival playing broken consort repertoire. She is appearing this season with: The Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Upper Valley Baroque, Marsh Chapel Collegium , North Star Baroque, Three Notch’d Road, Spire, Winchendon Music Festival, Portland Bach Experience, Zenith Ensemble, Meravelha, Back Bay Chorale, Lexington Symphony, Symphony New Hampshire, and Folk Baroque. The Boston Musical Intelligencer describes Joy’s interpretation as “virtuosic and colorfully ornamented” and “performed with precision and elegance.” Joy earned a bachelor’s degree in viola performance and anthropology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She obtained a master’s and doctorate in Viola performance at Boston University under the tutelage of Michelle LaCourse and Ed Gazouleas. Joy is on faculty at the Suzuki school of Newton, a former President of the Massachusetts Suzuki Association, and has presented at the International Suzuki Conference teaching baroque dance. Joy loves contra and tap-dancing, canning veggies from Waltham Fields Community Farm, and camping and Cape Cod beach days with her husband and son.
