Scholarships and Awards

The Handel and Haydn Society presents annual awards to high school and college students and graduates. The Candace Macmillen Achtmeyer Award, the Evangelyna Etienne Award, and the Barbara E. Maze Award for Music Excellence are awarded to Vocal Arts Program students and alumni who have demonstrated a high degree of achievement in and commitment to the vocal arts.

Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award (for H+H Youth Choruses and high school seniors)

The Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award extends H+H’s support with a $2000 cash award to an outstanding senior who has participated for at least two years in the H+H Youth Choruses (High School Soloists, Chorus of Tenors and Basses, Chorus of Sopranos and Altos).

The award was named in the memory of Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer in 2001. A member of the Handel and Haydn Society Board starting in 1993, Candace was a member of the Education Committee, where she voiced passionate opinions about the Society’s responsibility to the community and children in particular. We miss her quiet yet persuasive leadership, her unfailing support for H+H and its mission, and her enduring vision for our future.

Evangelyna Etienne Scholarship Award (for HHYC students and alumni ages 16–24)

“H+H has given me so much that it’s hard to put into words, and I know that it has shaped me not only as a musician but as a person.”–EVANGELYNA ETIENNE

The Evangelyna Etienne Scholarship Award extends a $1000 award to a current or former HHYC student between the ages of 16 and 24 who plans to continue vocal training at the college level.

This award is named in memory of Handel and Haydn Society Youth Choruses alumna Evangelyna Etienne who passed away in September 2011 after battling a terminal illness. She joined H+H at age 10 and progressed through the youth choral ensembles through her high school graduation. As a High School Soloist, she studied voice with Barbara Winchester at the New England Conservatory and piano with Bert Yocom. A graduate of Saugus High School, Ms. Etienne was a Music Education major at Gordon College from 2008–2011, studying voice with Susan Brooks. She was the 2008 co-recipient of H+H’s Candace MacMillen Achtmeyer Award and the 2011 recipient of the Barbara E. Maze Award for Musical Excellence. Through her commitment and passion for vocal music, Evangelyna displayed a generosity of spirit and an ability to inspire others as a music educator and performer at the highest levels of musical excellence.
